Geotechnical Sustainability in the United Arab Emirates–Sustainability Rating Tools

Ryan Sochanik

Abstract: Sustainability and the concept of sustainable development now form part of governmental policy around the world. The United Arab Emirates is no different, recognising that its ecological footprint and continued growth require management of resources and waste streams. A fundamental part of this is sustainable construction and operation of civil engineering projects such as buildings, roads and airports. Geotechnical engineering is required on practically all civil engineering projects yet is often overlooked when design and construction decisions are being made regarding civil engineering sustainability. One of the most common ways to measure sustainability in civil engineering projects is through rating tools. Rating tools have grown and developed internationally for decades and are used across the world for various different projects (buildings, roads, infrastructure etc.). The United Arab Emirates have developed their own local ratings tools (and sustainability frameworks) and have mandated their use in certain projects. There is significant scope for geotechnical engineering to contribute to improving sustainability and rating tools are one element that can be developed. A detailed review of local and international ratings tools is carried out to understand where geotechnical engineering can currently contribute and the possibilities to improve geotechnical sustainability in the United Arab Emirates are discussed.

CURCUMET CAPSULES: A Natural Immunomodulator Helps to Prevent Covid-19 Infection

Govind Shukla, Uddhav L.Kanade, Monica Yadav, M.Sabitha & C.J.Sampath Kumar

Abstract: The whole world is suffering from the corona virus, a global pandemic, which has captured world attention to the immune system. As the world scrambles to find a cure for Covid-19, health experts have suggested boosting the body’s immunity. Immune system defense against bacteria, virus and other organisms may help minimize the effects and hasten the recovery from the disease. Covid-19 still has a troublingly high mortality rate. A person with a strong immune system and good body health should be able to recover from severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections without any complications because the immune system produced antibodies. Immunity will be “our savior” against the virus. The idea is that if you don’t have a potent weapon to combat the enemy, a strong and effective shield is the best bet to protect yourself. There are still millions of people in the world at risk due to old age, weak immune system and pre-existing medical issue. Turmeric plays a major role to boost the immune system and a potent immunomodulatory agent that can help the population to prevent the covid-19 infection. Based on these facts A Natural immunomodulatory agent CURCUMET CAPSULES has been Developed by R&D Centre, Lactonova Nutripharm (P) Ltd, HYDERABAD. The present paper Reviews the Role of CURCUMET CAPSULES, A Natural immunomodulatory agent helps to prevent covid-19 infection.

Smart Garbage Monitoring System using Internet of Things

Prince Kelvin Owusu

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) can play a major role in keeping the city of Accra clean, greener, more efficient, and safer. This paper proposed a smart garbage collection on the grounds of level of garbage present in the dustbin. This study tries to present a garbage collection management solution based on providing intelligence to dustbin using IoT prototype with sensors. This system would help to maintain cleanness of the streets of Accra Ghana by sending signals through a sensor to a garbage collection unit alerting this unit of the collection of the garbage as and when the dustbins are full. The extreme programming (XP) method was used in building the system which uses ultrasonic sensors placed in the lids of the bins to detect the garbage level and compare it with the garbage bins depth. The system makes use of AVR family microcontroller, LEDs, a SIM800L GSM/GPRS Module and was powdered by a 12V transformer. It was found out that the use of this system assisted in identifying places or areas where garbage bins are full for collection and disposal. It was also found out that waste management companies that adapted the use of this system were achieving their goals of collecting bins at the right time as compare to companies that were not making use of such technology. It was concluded that waste management companies using the system perform better in terms of picking up bins that were full due to the signals received at any point in time which has made in Accra Ghana a community without garbage bins over flowing with rubbish.
