The Myth of The Secular Nigerian State and National Development

Abstract: Nigeria is a secular state in theory, but religion supremacy functions have become expressions of political identity, often resulting in conflicts over resources, land, and political offices. Increasing clashes between religious groups have disturbed peaceful coexistence. This paper traces historical and contemporary issues of religious plurality and its impact on national development, emphasizing the security dilemma in Nigeria. It concludes that meaningful national development cannot occur without interreligious peace and harmony.
